St. Kitts and Nevis has signed a Sector Budget Support Programme with the European Union for 5 million euros (EC$15.437M) aimed at supporting the country in advancing towards energy self-sufficiency from local renewable energy sources. The overall objective of the programme is to develop a sustainable energy sector.
This three-year programme will also support the Government in its attempt to build resilience within the energy and water sectors, to ensure that the population has access to the basic needs of water and electricity when the country is severely impacted by exogenous shocks such as hurricanes. Some specific outcomes will include the installation of energy efficient street lights.
