Stigma is being advanced as one of the reasons why males tend to shy away from the Nursing Profession. The subject became more of a talking point this past weekend after two government ministers: Junior Health Minister Wendy Phipps and Senior Government Minister Vance Amory appealed for more people, including males, to become nurses.
There is a perception that males tend to stay away from nursing because they are afraid of being stigmatized. However former Chief Medical Officer Patrick Martin thinks too much is being made of this alleged stigmatization. He recommends proper marketing and attractive work conditions in the nursing sector as factors that could bring a desired change.
